Background:

A former labor rights and magazine editor Somyot Prueksakasemsuk has already been continuously detained for  six years. Somyot is known for his active support for the empowerment of the workers’ movement and the right to freedom of association both in Thailand and internationally. He was  arrested on 30 April 2011, five days after he launched a petition campaign to collect 10,000 signatures required for a parliamentary review of Article 112 of Thailand’s Criminal Code, which prohibits acts of insulting, defaming or threatening Thailand’s king, heir apparent or Regent.

On January 23, 2013, the Bangkok Criminal Court sentenced him to 10 years in prison on two counts for allowing the publication of  two articles that deemed to be lese majeste offence in Voice of Taksin magazine that he was an editor.

On February 23, 2017, the Supreme Court reduced his jail sentence from 10 years to seven years, citing his age, years served, and the fact that he was not the author of the article he had published containing alleged lèse majesté content.
